California Real Estate Application Requirements Broker Education in Lieu of Experience You must be at least 18 years of age or older to be issued a license. Before you obtain your Salespersons License you must show evidence of successful completion of three college-level courses in Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice, and one additional college-level course selected from among the following: Real Estate Appraisal, Property Management, Real Estate Finance, Real Estate Economics, Legal Aspects of Real Estate, Real Estate Office Administration, General Accounting, Business Law, Escrow’s, Mortgage Loan Brokering and Lending. When applying for the exam, students must submit evidence of completing the necessary approved courses. Our courses are approved by both the Real Estate Department (DRE) and the Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE) as correspondence (home-study) courses under our publisher name Television Education. These approvals mean we are authorized to issue a Certification of Completion to students when they complete the course.
Additionally, the Department of Real Estate now allows license applicants to submit their fingerprints after applying to take the real estate examination. Previously all applicants were required to submit their fingerprints after passing the license examination. A Live Scan Service Request (RE237) is available from the Department of Real Estate.

A minimum of two years full-time licensed salesperson experience within the last five years or the equivalent is required. Broker Education in Lieu of Experience An applicant with a four-year degree from an accredited college is exempt from the two-year salesperson experience requirement. Other types of real estate-related experience will be considered, provided that it satisfies the intent of the law.

Original license applicants who reside out of state should submit the $51 fingerprint processing fee to the DRE with their application and license fee. Examination Scheduling is based on the volume of applications received. Exams are generally administered in the following cities: Fresno, San Diego, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Sacramento. Salesperson Exam Time: 3 hours 15 min. Brokers Exam Time: 5 hours, administered in a 2 1/2 morning session and a 2 1/2 hour afternoon session. To pass the Salesperson examination, you must correctly answer at least 70% of the questions. Since the exam is qualifying in nature, examinees that pass are not informed of their final score. Those who pass will receive an application for a license. Examination results will be mailed to you normally within five working days after examination. To pass the Brokers examination, you must correctly answer at least 75% of the questions. Since the exam is qualifying in nature, examinees that pass are not informed of their final score.
